Artist Statement:

My paintings are made to engage the viewer on the idea of the sublime, which can be defined as the experience we have when we are confronted by something very large and very powerful, leaving us with a sense of awe. In nature, I find myself faced with the idea of the sublime, such as the middle of the ocean or on the edge of a cliff looking outward onto a flat plain. In these places, I am confronted with this expanding vastness. These landscapes include subjects such as a peaceful sun setting over the middle of the ocean to a storm system moving across a landmass. I want the viewer to relate with this idea of the sublime where they are filled with this beautiful terror. There is so much in life that we don’t understand and that is unexplained. When I choose images to paint, I choose locations that evoke feelings of wonder and awe. Vastness, infiniteness, boundlessness, openness or spaciousness are recurring throughout my body of work.
